Alex Kingston, the actress best known for her role in ER, will play Lady Macbeth opposite Sir Kenneth Branagh in his new production.

Kingston, who also plays River Song in Doctor Who, will appear in the play, which is being staged in a deconsecrated church and marks Sir Kenneth's return to Shakespeare after more than a decade.

Her previous roles with the Royal Shakespeare Company include Hero in Much Ado About Nothing, Cordelia in King Lear and Jaquenetta in Love's Labour's Lost.

He has brought a number of Shakespeare's plays to the big screen, most memorably Henry V and Much Ado About Nothing, in which he played Benedict opposite Emma Thompson's Beatrice. The couple later married but divorced in 1995.
